Cooked Cheep with rice: $357.14

Although we now clearly have a number of delicious favorite "local" restaurants, we continue on our occasional forays into the Doha culinary unknown.

This particular evening, we took an unsuspecting family along with us. They were good sports, thank goodness. These photos are from an Yemeni folk food restaurant at the souq. It's a small place, probably seating no more than 40 people? And the interior decorations are really cool--it reminded me of a small New Mexican adobe apartment, two stories with the kitchen and front desk downstairs and four small seating areas upstairs. We were in the only seating area with...seats...the rest had Persian carpets and pillows for sitting on the floor.

We had six adults, a 12 year old, a 10 year old, a 6 year old, and a 4 year old with us. Here's most of the menu.

Now study these for a few minutes and think about them...picture yourself with your family and small children, and ask yourself...what would you order? (Sidenote: these prices are in Qatar Riyale, so divide by 3.64 to get the cost in USD.)

A little more of the menu.  By the way, this restaurant doesn't open until sometime after 4 PM.
What are you going to order?

Thankfully, as I said, our guests were great sports. We laughed a lot and sort of marveled at the menu. Then we ordered dinner: a mixed platter of 1/2 a billy goat and 3 chickens, which also came with a sort of stewed vegetable stuff, salad, and lots and lots of spiced (saffron) rice.  That and 13 canned drinks (Cokes, orange Fantas, etc.).  The food was definitely "folk" food but was actually delicious.

The total bill was less than 200 riyal...that's about $50 for six adults and four kids.

Next time, I'm going back to get some blindfolded with honey and some applied Sanaa private, perhaps with a little gesture.  I will not, however, be getting complaisant.
